LEVELS OF PROTECTION AND THE N.I.J.: The National Institute of Justice (N.I.J.) is a part of the Justice Department. In 1971, the NIJ established a voluntary national standard for police body armor. This standard has been revised many times in order to reflect the ongoing changes in ballistic technology and the increased threats to police officers. The current standard, NIJ standard 0101.03, is fully endorsed by the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Fraternal Order of Police, the Police Executive Research Forum, and the Technology Assessment Program Advisory Council (TAPAC)
